چکیده

Before technologic advances in imaging, such as PET/ MRI and molecular imaging–guided oncologic treatment, changed the practice of radiology, before antibiotics and vaccines provided widespread pharmacologic means to treat and prevent disease, before antiseptic technique markedly reduced surgical death rates, our ability to minister to patients and their families was to listen, comfort, and support. We’ve come full circle, once again listening, comforting, and supporting the needs of patients and their families by integrating their individualized preferences, experiences, and expertise into contemporary medical practices. In this special issue of JACR, we focus on patientand family-centered care (PFCC) in radiology and radiation oncology. We have expanded the roles patients can play. Patients, caregivers, and advocates served as coauthors or reviewers, in other words, coproducers of meaningful content. The issue represents a journey for us as practitioners and as a profession. Although many would argue that radiologists have limited patient interaction, few would argue that radiology does not affect the patient experience. PFCC traces its roots back to the post–World War II changes in health; Rawson and Moretz [1] review its evolution. On an operational level, there are many opportunities for individual radiologists, practices, hospitals, or radiology professional societies to improve the patient experience. Jensen et al [2] describe the intersection of quality improvement and patient experience, and Rawson et al [3,4] describe their 20-year experience of implementing PFCC in radiology care practices at an academic

Patient- and Family-Centered Care: A Primer.

Patient- and family-centered care is a model of providing care in which the patient and family are partners with the provider and care team. A resurgence of interest in patient- and family-centered care is due, in part, to increasing consumerism in health care and the linking of reimbursement to the patient experience. Individual radiologists, practices, enterprises, and radiology professional ...

Lessons Learned From Two Decades of Patient- and Family-Centered Care in Radiology, Part 1: Getting Started.

Patient- and family-centered care has a long history, but the application of these principles to radiology is limited by infrequent direct patient contact for many radiologists; scarce peer-reviewed data in the radiology literature; and sparse access to implementation strategies, tools, and best practices. In a series of two articles, the authors share two decades of lessons learned from implem...

Lessons Learned From Two Decades of Patient- and Family-Centered Care in Radiology, Part 2: Building a Culture.

As reimbursements are increasingly linked to patient experience, physicians and hospitals will need to find ways to incorporate patient and family input into operational decisions. Rather than starting from the beginning, health systems could learn from practitioners who have been experimenting in this space and are willing to share their experience. The authors share lessons learned from two d...

Patient-centered Fertility Care: From Theory to Practice

Background & aim: Healthcare areas, especially fertility care (commonly accompanied with high emotions, as well as long-term and recurring treatment periods) could exclusively benefit from patient-centered care (PCC). Despite evident advantages of PCC, this approach has not been practiced as a routine procedure in current clinical environments yet, even in western developed countries. Therefore...
